Generating New Leads

The requirement for effective lead generation is a common theme in all the companies I've worked for, consulted with or set up myself. Given that there is usually a limit to the revenue contribution available from the existing customer base, one of the key tasks which just about every company faces is to find new customers.

Most business owners and managers accept that it can be difficult, expensive and time consuming to prospect and attract new customers. Very few people like to make cold calls, whether at the doorstep, by telephone, in the street, or indeed any other method.

A Eureka Moment?

I'm a methodical person by nature, and not usually known for Eureka moments. However, what I'm about to introduce you to, is as close as I'm going to get to a Eureka moment in my business life.

I was undertaking some business consultancy in December, 2007, and I had cause to research a certain element of eBay.

I've been an avid eBay user since 1999 and I've sold thousands of items over the years. Indeed I was so impressed by eBay that, four years ago, I created and published the eBay Auction Newsletter which now has 42,000 subscribers.

In 2007, eBay made two announcements. Individually the announcements were reasonably significant, but not earth shattering.

During my business consultancy research last December, I realised that these two announcements had the potential to enable virtually every business to implement a new, low cost, yet highly effective lead generation channel.
